What really bothers me though is the content of the commercial and it shows what Fat Shaming can do to a person.

In the commercial, Oprah states: âInside every overweight woman is a woman she knows she can be.” – So the message she gives is that the woman we are is not the woman we can be unless we are thin.Â There is something wrong with us that prevents us from being fully (pun intended) who we are.Â What kind of message is that Oprah?Â How about you just tell overweight women to stop trying anything, stop being anything – because – well, they obviously can’t be all that they can be unless they are thin.Â What a crock of….

Sometime during my last year of high school I passed out during a school trip.Â I hit my head and had a concussion.Â I spent ten days in the hospital.Â After a while I tried to get back on to the trampoline but my head would have nothing of it.Â I had to quit the only sport I ever loved and with that also came weight gain that made me hate myself.Â It’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since and the last ten years have been really hard.Â I know I need to lose weight (because I want to be more comfortable than I am) and my size makes me acutely aware of the space I occupy no matter where I am.Â I have yet to learn to love my body (and I am not sure I ever will) but there is one thing that Oprah says that I will never buy into and that is that I can only be all that I can be if I am thin.Â No Oprah, you have that all wrong.Â That is what society wants you to believe.

No matter what size you are, no matter if skinny or thin or normal or overweight or obese – you CAN be all that you can be.Â Weight is just one small facet of who we are, there is so much more to each and every one of us. We can go after our dreams and reach for the stars just like anybody else.Â We can be all that we can be —Â or, as Liz Black writes: “You don’t have to wait until you lose weight to be your best self. If weight loss is important to you, go for it, but stop expecting that your world is going to miraculously change just because you shed some pounds. It won’t. You can change your world, achieve your dreams, and strive for a goal, regardless of your shape and size. Let’s stop pretending that life begins once you’re finally skinny, and begin it now.”
